In July 2019, our communities won a historic victory with the successful renewal of the mandate of the Independent Expert on violence and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity: a new report by ARC International, ILGA World and ISHR explains how the process played out. Reading these pages will allow you to follow the steps in the process that led the Human Rights Council to #RenewIESOGI. Human rights defenders around the world advocated for the adoption of the resolution.
In the end, 27 States voted in favour of the renewal of the mandate with 52 States from every region of the world co-sponsoring the resolution. These record-high numbers signal a shift: it is reassuring to witness that the international community is becoming both more aware and less tolerant of violence and discrimination on the basis of SOGI!

UN renews crucial mandate for protection against violence and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity

In a defining vote, the United Nations Human Rights Council adopted a resolution to renew the mandate of the Independent Expert focusing on the protection against violence and discrimination on the basis of  sexual orientation and gender identity.
The resolution was adopted by a vote of 27 in favor, with 7 voting against and 12 abstentions.
The campaign calling on the Council to renew the mandate of the UN Independent Expert on SOGI was supported by 1,312 non-governmental organizations from 174 States and territories.
“This is another historic victory, not only for communities of diverse sexual orientations and gender identities, but for humanity as a whole.”

CALL TO ACTION: Join us urging the HRC to renew the mandate of the IESOGI

Join the CSOs urging the Human Rights Council to renew the mandate of the Independent Expert on violence and discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity during its 41st session. A decision by Council Members to renew this mandate would send a clear message that violence and discrimination against people of diverse SOGI cannot be tolerated. It would reaffirm that specific, sustained and systematic attention is needed to address these human rights violations and ensure that LGBT people can live a life of dignity.

The Mandate of the SOGI IE: The compelling case for its renewal in 2019

This article by Arvind Narrain makes the case for why the mandate of the Independent Expert on SOGI must be renewed based on an analysis of the work of the Independent Expert in three areas, namely country visits, sending letters of allegation to individual countries and producing thematic reports on SOGI issues.
